MAY
The Macedonian player,
Predrag Rusevski, is our featured
player for May. During this month, 24 year old Predrag competed in
three Futures tournaments, all in Bosnia & Herzegovina on clay
courts.
The first tournament, BIH F2, was held in Sarajevo and Predrag was the
number 1 seed. A 63 64 win in the first round over Matteo Volante was
followed by victory by means of a walkover against Dusan Mihailovic.
The quarter finals provided another straight sets victory to set up a
semi final against Ante Nakic-Alfirevic of Croatia, the first, and
only, seeded player Predrag was to encounter in this event. Following a
closely fought opening set which Predrag took 7-2 on a tie break came a
relatively straight forward 60 second set win taking Predrag into the
final. Cypriot Photos Kallias provided the opposition and in a similar
fashion to the semi final, Predrag won a close first set, this time 75
before wrapping up the title with a 60 second set triumph. Also at this
tournament, Predrag partnered Lazar Magdincev, also from Macedonia, to
the doubles title winning all their matches in straight sets and
dropping a total of just 6 games, including an emphatic 60 60 semi
final win.
Next was the BIH F3 tournament held in Brcko. Here Predrag was once
again seeded, this time though as number 3. Following a straight sets
victory in the opening round came three successive matches against
qualifiers, including a semi final against Aldin Setkic who had already
defeated the tournaments number 1 seed in the opening round. Predrag
and Aldin had met at the quarter final stage of BIH F2 the previous
week, and as at that tournament, Predrag was to emerge the victor,
albeit this time due to Aldin retiring with the scores tied at 22 in
the opening set. Predrag claimed his second successive singles title
with a 75 75 win over number 2 seed Ivan Dodig. Once more, Predrag
entered the doubles event, again partnering Lazar Magdincev, and as in
the previous week they claimed the title without dropping any sets.
Going into BIH F4 held at Prijedor, Predrag was seeded 2 and also at
his career highest in the ATP singles and doubles rankings, 351 and 357
respectively.
It is also where he was aiming to complete a hat trick of successive
singles titles in Bosnia & Herzegovina. After winning the opening
two rounds in straight sets, Predrag finally lost his first set in
three events to bring to an end an impressive run of 21 successive sets
won (not including the walkover at BIH F2). Despite the loss of the
opening set in the quarter final, Predrag recovered to take the next
two sets to move into the semi final. Swiss opponent, Patrick
Eichenberger retired during the match whilst trailing by a set and 20.
Number 3 seed Blaz Kavcic from Slovenia was to be Predrag’s opponent in
the final and he was unable to prevent Predrag from winning 63 64 and
thus claiming his third straight singles title. Predrag did not enter
the doubles event this time.
A rather successful month for Predrag, three singles titles from three
tournaments dropping just the one set, two doubles titles from two
tournaments without dropping a single set and also moving to his career
highest ranking in both the ATP singles and doubles rankings lists. The
three titles won this month took Predrag’s singles titles total for
2007 to five – all on clay.
