Hello Miles. Let me start off with saying that it seems you guys
have done a truly terrific job for the newest FM, I don’t think there
has been so much interest in the game since FM 2005.
So finally,
what the fans have been the most excited and worried about, the 3D view
has come to Football Manager. Is what you achieved exactly what you
were planning from the start with that aspect of the game? Is the
players’ animation going to flow nicely and there won’t be the basic 3D
errors such as players walking through one another?
The 3d
view has been a long time coming. We’ve had a couple of aborted
attempts over the last few years, and started on this iteration of it
about 10 months ago.
What we wanted to achieve is a 3d view of
the FM match engine, and that is what’s there. Animation wise, what was
shown in the videos released was less than 50% of the total animations
we want in there, and each day it’s getting better and better, so we’re
pretty happy with it going into the final phase of development. The
core work underneath that is mainly done, with bug fixes now being the
priority.
We are wondering how the 3D view is connected with
the way players look in the game. Are we going to be able to see a
difference between Crouch and Messi, between white and black players?
If yes, are these attributes going to change over time eg. youngsters
growing bigger over time, an experienced player losing hair and such?
Skin tone, hair colour, height and weight are all taken into account.
Is the 3D view going to decrease the speed of the game and increase the PC requirements?
It
doesn’t decrease the speed of the game, no. It will increase the PC
requirements. The idea is that if your machine can’t handle 3d, it will
default to 2d, but the minimum specs would rise this year with or
without 3d, due to the other new features. This, however, is no
different to any other year.
Are you planning to expand on
the 3D view in future with the audience, video cameras, photographers,
stewards, fans chanting and such?
As with all features in our games, we will expand on them in future versions of the game if we think it’s needed.
One
of the already announced changes, the one you forgot to mention in the
movie, was the newgens. Could you elaborate a bit on what you’ve
changed in this aspect of the game?
The improvements have
been made to the player progression module, give more realistic player
development, more variation in the player’s learning curve. Wonderkids
start off as better players making sure clubs realise what they are
worth. Also more effect to the attribute development, based on the
training schedules which we set.
Are the fans going to be able to edit more of the graphics in FM 2009, such as the grass or the ads surrounding the pitch?
The
ads will not be skinnable at all. We’re not sure about the grass yet -
we’d like that to be possible, but don’t know if it’ll be this year.
You’ve
talked about how much you improved the role of the assistant manager.
Aren’t you afraid that the game might get just too easy?
No - you can easily ignore him!
The
relationships with press - are they going to be created just with one
journalist or are they simply going to apply to the newspaper he
represents?
Potentially both…
In the movie you
mentioned that we should be careful with what we say to the
journalists, otherwise it might “haunt us” later on in the future.
Could you present us a hypothetical story in which one of our responses
“haunts us”?
Let’s say I will be playing attacking football, and I draw my first few games 0-0. Don’t expect that to go unnoticed…
Of
course we are curious about the possibility to add our own comments
during the press conferences - what exactly is it for and is the game
somehow able to translate some sentences into its own language? What do
we have to say for game to uderstand and react?
It’s mainly
to be able to keep a record of what you are saying - the press
conferences have histories, so you can use them as notes. Some things
are picked up on, but it’s pretty limited deliberately, as we want to
see how people use them before expanding, if we decide to do so, in the
future.
What exactly are the transfer speculations going to
have effect on? Are the players going to fell it somehow (flattered or
whatever) or is it more about us, managers? Mind games?
It can have the same effect transfer rumours have in real life, and any other media story inside the game.
Is asking a player to learn some preffered moves going to increase his attributes in specific areas as well?
PPM’s are not attribute specific.
Being
a woman - is it going to have some greater effects on us during the
game or is it just a small change for the female community playing FM?
It’s
a change for the female community playing FM, and a reflection of the
amount of females now involved in the modern game, mainly at board room
and physio level. We expect that trend to continue.
Thanks a lot for the interview, I hope we did not take too much of your precious time in this busy period.
No problem! Thanks for taking the time to ask the questions
