Jason Collins has the best-selling jersey in the NBA

On Sunday, Jason Collins made his season debut for the Brooklyn Nets, making him the first openly gay player to play in one of the four major sports leagues. Judging from the fan response, it’s clear that people all over the world want to celebrate this historic moment.

Immediately after Collins’ first game with the Nets, the NBA made No. 98 “COLLINS” jerseys available both at their official store in New York and on NBA.com, and a league spokesman confirmed to For The Win that Collins’ jersey was the bestselling jersey on Tuesday in terms of both physical and online sales.

Collins himself hasn’t worn the soon-to-be-iconic No. 98 Nets Jersey yet. Given that he signed a 10-day contract with the Nets the same day he played his first game, he was stuck with a generic No. 46 jersey the team had in its supplies.

Collins wore No. 98 in the 2012-13 season for both the Boston Celtics and Washington Wizards, in tribute to Matthew Shepard, the gay teenager who was murdered in 1998.

Not every 35-year-old 10-day contract signee gets their own jersey for sale in the league’s official store. But not every 35-year-old 10-day contract signee is a trail blazer like Collins.
